Men’s Soccer: Elon shuts down Clemson 2-0

By Matt Curry, WSOE Sports

On a very rainy Wednesday night at Rhodes Stadium, Elon defeated the Clemson tigers 2-0. It was a rough game, with the first yellow card coming in the first two minutes. There were many early good scoring opportunities for both teams, but the goalies were holding off the offences and made some spectacular point blank stops. The Clemson defense would be tested for the rest of the half, and would allow two first half goals, the first with 18 minutes left off the foot of Chris Thomas, while the second, a strike from James Carroll.

The Elon Phoenix controlled possession in the second half, holding down their side of the field. It really seemed like the rain was a factor all game for both teams. Many sloppy passes and errors were made on the part of both teams, and Elon was able to capitalize in what seemed to be a chess match on both sides of the field. Elon really seemed to be clicking on all ends of their game plan as they completely controlled the second half, and gave little chance to the opposing team to get back into the game. Look for Elon to continue to play well in their next game and hopefully extend the two game winning streak.

Elon (2-2-1) will next travel to play East Tennessee State on Saturday, while the Clemson Tigers (0-4-1) will play Sunday at home against Virginia Tech.
