So with a big week upcoming in the AL East I thought it would be a good idea to focus on the top three competitors in the division: the Yankees, the Red Sox, and the Rays. All three teams are currently doing very well in their division and leading the wild card race. This week features a two game set between the Sox and Rays, and a four game set between the Sox and Yankees. Right now the season series among these teams looks like this:
Yankees – 6 Rays – 5
Yankees – 0 Red Sox – 8
Red Sox – 2 Rays – 6
The first series is between the Sox and Rays. Both teams are on a roll and I believe they will split the two games. I think going into the first game Boston should have won because Lester came in pitching very well and offense was red hot. The second game should also be close. I give the edge to Tampa Bay only because I believe Price will have a good outing if he can control his fastball, which has been devastating against hitters.
The second series is going to be just like the first eight games played between the Sox and Yankees. I think the only game the Yankees will win is Saturday because Sabathia is one of the hottest pitchers in the AL at the moment. I think the Yankees lineup will go cold when put up against the rotation and bullpen of the Sox. I just don’t feel like the Yankees can handle the Sox and that is why they dropped the first eight games this season against Boston.
With that said about the upcoming series, I think this weekend will show us a couple of things. The Yankees are not the team to beat, the Sox will win the division, and the Rays will be right back in the Wild Card race. I still think the Yankees will win the Wild Card, but it will be interesting to see how close Tampa Bay will be.
